As the son and grandson of famers, Avery's first-hand knowledge of the soil goes beyond the plants and animals he raised on the land. Avery grew up working outside from dusk to dawn, plowing fields and tending his father's prized corn crop. Following high school, Avery attended Clemson University and received a bachelor's degree. He has also has a degree in Landscape Architecture from North Carolina A&T State University, where he was awarded top honors including University Olmsted Scholar, Student Merit/Honor Award of Excellence, and was inducted into the Sigma Lambda Alpha Honor Society. He is currently an North Carolina A&T State University Curriculum Advisory Board member and Capstone Project Mentor.
Avery has landscape design experience working for New Garden Landscaping & Nursery, Jeff Allen Landscape Architecture, and Progressive Landscapes, LLC. He has also taught design software to students at Forsyth Technical Community College.
Avery, his wife and young son live and work in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Avery's family still maintains a farm in South Carolina, where Avery hopes his son will continue to learn about the land outside beyond the sights and sounds of city life.
